Jewel beetles already solved this.
An elytron is the hardened wing case of a beetle. The color is not paint. It is a photonic crystal: stacked layers that send some wavelengths back and let others through.
We use the same family of materials — dielectric films, mineral yarns — on jewelry and recovery knits. The object is still an object. It does not diagnose, treat, or ping a server.
